Iberian ibex herd

Male group in a rocky spot.

Male group in a rocky spot.

The iberian ibex usually form herds, normally they are herds made up of only males or females and their young. In the heat season you can also see herds formed by both types of sex. The groups made up exclusively of males are visually spectacular due to the set of their antlers. Both the groups of males and females are usually led by one of the oldest specimens. Even being outside the mating period, there may be some disputes in the groups of males, to define the hierarchy of the group. The females are separated from their group to give birth, but soon after, they return to the herd with their young.

In order to feed themselves, the animals located in the outer part of the group are in charge of monitoring and alerting of the presence of possible predators, while the animals located in the inner part of the group are exclusively dedicated to feeding themselves. When the groups rest lying on the rocks, this vigilance is less intense, they are usually located in more protected places to rest and the animals lying down are much less visible to potential predators.
